AP Psychology | Live with Asynchronous Option | 25-26

This live online AP Psychology course for high school homeschoolers is the equivalent of a one-semester introductory college Psychology class. It is designed to introduce students to the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of human beings and animals. Students are exposed to the psychological facts, principles, and phenomena associated with each of the major subfields within psychology. It can be taken live or in an asynchronous manner.

  • Live Classes: Students meet live with their instructor and classmates for 60 minutes once a week. These live sessions provide a review of topics covered in weekly lessons and a platform for class discussion and questions.

  • One-on-One Meeting Times: Students or parents who wish to meet one-on-one with the instructor can easily book meeting times throughout each week on her Google calendar.

  • Dates: August 18, 2025 to May 2026 (AP Exam)

  • Weekly Classes: Live or asynchronous option (choose one at time of registration) 

    • Live option: Mondays @ 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Eastern​ | CLOSED

      • Students attend and actively participate in live classes weekly with cameras on.

    • Asynchronous option: | CLOSED

      • Students watch the recording of each week's live class and complete a discussion forum with their async classmates related to the week's live class content.

      • Please note:

        • The asynchronous option is NOT a self-paced class.

        • The instructional content, assignments, and deadlines are the same for live and asynchronous.

        • Students will register for one mode (live or async) and stay in that mode during the year.

  • Individual Meeting Bookings offered throughout each week through Google calendar.

  • Grade Level: 10th-12th (15+) | Successfully completed 10th grade English class​

    • Students share an interactive online classroom and meet live on Zoom.

    • Students who attend live will be expected to keep their webcams on.

    • Live classes will be recorded for those who miss classes or prefer to watch later.

  • Average weekly time estimate: 7-8 hours including recorded and live instruction

  • All Blue Tent science/social science courses are NCAA-approved.

  • This AP Psychology complies with the AP course audit and has been approved by the College Board.

Foundational Elements

Students in AP Psychology use a teacher-provided text and video resources to complete lesson concept maps, work on small projects, and use resources provided by the College Board to prepare for the AP exam.  A typical unit might include the following:

  • Multiple short videos, powerpoint presentations, and text links are provided to help students fill out lesson concept maps

  • Quizzes to test understanding of terms and concepts

  • CollegeBoard Progress Checks to assess students' mastery of topics

  • Unit application projects so students can apply psychology in their daily lives. Most students come to know themselves and others more consciously through these projects. They are the real joy of the course. 

​Concept maps are teacher-graded within 24 hours of submission, students will self grade their free responses on the CB progress checks in order to fully understand the College Board grading styles, and students receive individual feedback from their unit assessments.

  • An ebook of Bedford, Freeman & Worth's Myers' Psychology for the AP Course (2024, 4th edition) by Myers, DeWall & Hammer.

    • This well-regarded text has been revised and adapted to follow the College Board's newly updated curriculum framework that will be in place beginning in the 2024-25 school year.

    • The ebook can be accessed on or off line and has a number of helpful interactive features such as allowing a student to highlight, take notes, change the font, and listen to the text content using its audio reader.

In their online classroom, students will interact and collaborate with their instructors and peers every week as they learn about the ethics and methods psychologists use in their science and practice.

More about Emily Hinman

Emily Hinman brings nearly 20 years of international experience in education to Blue Tent. After graduating from Cleveland State University with an MA in Clinical Counseling Psychology and a School Psychologist license, she and her husband moved to Tbilisi, Georgia, where she taught Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Precalculus, and AP Calculus. 

 

Moving then to Vilnius, Lithuania, she taught AP Psychology and worked as a Guidance Counselor at the American International School of Vilnius.  Along this journey, she obtained a

teaching certification in Special Education and Mathematics from the University of Missouri and a Graduate Certificate in Mind, Brain, and Learning from Johns Hopkins University.

In Skopje, Northern Macedonia, she began teaching online, and she has worked online with students from all over the world over the last seven years, teaching Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Precalculus, AP Statistics, and AP Psychology.

 

Currently, Emily lives on a small farm in Ispank, Hungary, with her husband, four children, four dogs, five chickens, and two rabbits. Her children all attend a local Hungarian school, learning Hungarian as a native language. Emily and her husband take full responsibility for teaching them to read and write in English as well as to become productive members of the household. The Hinman family loves reading, cooking, hiking, gardening, and running together. 

Emily understands the importance of technology in our lives. She believes that to work effectively with young learners, she needs to incorporate new educational resources that capture their attention. At the same time, she has a deep desire to maintain strong personal relationships in her classes. Her goal is for students to feel they are working with a caring person who can be trusted to help them learn from both their successes and failures.
