This online Trigonometry class is set up as a self-paced workshop for homeschoolers who want to brush up on or extend their Trig skills.

  • It will introduce or reinforce the more difficult trigonometry topics before or during a Precalculus class.

  • It will serve as a refresher for those who would like a review of Trig topics before diving into AP Calculus.

 

Class Details

  • Recommended pacing: 8-12 weeks; however, students can progress through the workshop at a pace that is optimal for them.

  • The instructor, Ashley Porter, will be readily available to answer questions via email, regularly scheduled office hours, or occasional one-on-one Zoom meetings.

  • Dates:

    • Can be started any time after June 1, 2021.

The Course Foundation

The course is structured to encourage weekly learning and practice, but students are free to watch the instructional videos and complete the lessons and assignments at any pace.

  • There are no live classes in this self-paced class, but students will interact with the instructor if they have questions and as she grades assignments and offers feedback.

  • A typical week will include a variety of elements: short instructional videos, practice assignments, and self-grading checkpoint quizzes to measure mastery of concepts.

  • All instructional resources will be provided online by the instructor.

  • Students will work in an online classroom, where they will access videos, guided notes and handouts, assignments and quizzes.

  • Students should expect to spend 2-4 hours per week (which includes the instructional videos) if they wish to complete the workshop in an 8-12 week timeframe.

This workshop will cover topics in functions, trigonometry, and analytical geometry.

  • Each section engages students in explorations of problem solving, strengthens critical-thinking skills through technology and study tips, and develops why trigonometry is important through real-life applications.

  • Topics include:

    • Introduction to Angles (degrees & radians)

    • Introduction to Right Angles

    • Introduction the Unit Circle

    • Solving Right Triangles

    • Properties and Graphing Trig Functions

    • Trigonometric Ratios & Identities 

    • Simplifying and Verifying Trig Expressions

    • Solving Trig Equations 

    • Graphing Polar Coordinates and Polar Equations

    • Exploring Properties of Conic Sections

Brush Up and Reinforce!

With the aid of teacher-created videos, a variety of interactive resources, and real-time access to the instructor for questions, this short workshop will help students master the more challenging Trig concepts that are essential to success in Precalculus and AP Calculus.
