Shin Yen

AP Calculus ABAP Calculus BC

Shin has homeschooled her three children for the last sixteen years and has taught math at all levels. Before embarking on her homeschooling journey, Shin attended The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art on a full tuition scholarship and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. She then continued her EE studies at Stanford University and graduated with a M.S. and a Ph.D. both in Electrical Engineering.

During graduate school, her research focused on 3D volume visualization,  3D image reconstruction and aliasing artifacts in the volumetric Spiral CT (Computed Tomography) data. She brings her extensive engineering background to her teaching and loves to motivate students by giving them examples of real-life engineering applications and showing them where a particular math topic fits in the big puzzle of science and engineering. She believes that this evokes in the student a sense of wonder about the power and beauty of math..

Math is fundamental to all science studies, and a good foundation in math goes a long way to ensuring that a love for the sciences is not cut short by frustration with the math involved. One of the subjects Shin loves teaching is Algebra 1 as it is the first course into abstract math and really the basis for all high school level math, chemistry, and physics. On the other end of the high school math sequence is AP Calculus, which is the entry into all college level math, science, and engineering courses. Students in calculus are often stumped not by the calculus concepts, but by the more complex algebra that is required to solve a calculus problem. A solid foundation in both courses is crucial to success in any STEM field.

Shin lives in sunny San Diego, California, with her husband and three children. Her oldest son is currently a junior at Stanford University majoring in math and philosophy; her second son will be heading to Northwestern University in the fall. Her youngest daughter is currently a homeschooling 9th grader (and thriving in all the Blue Tent language arts courses!). In her free time, Shin likes to garden in her backyard while listening to a good podcast. She also likes to knit and quilt and enjoys long hikes along the beach or into the canyons of San Diego with her family.
