Course Details

This self-paced English Literature & Composition 1 course is designed for motivated high school students who want advanced literary study, purposeful writing instruction, and the freedom to work independently.

Students in this course move through major works of literature—beginning with early foundational texts and progressing into modern and contemporary voices—while developing the analytical and writing skills needed for honors-level and AP English. The course offers the same academic standards, depth of feedback, and expectations as Blue Tent’s live and asynchronous English classes, without weekly due dates.

As experienced readers, students learn that an author’s intent and a reader’s interpretation are not always the same. Through close reading, guided discussion forums, and sustained writing practice, students examine how literature communicates meaning—emotionally, intellectually, and socially.

Readings span a wide range of time periods and genres, allowing students to trace how writers use enduring literary strategies—such as symbolism, motif, characterization, and structure—to explore universal ideas.

Writing instruction is closely tied to reading. Students compose analytical essays that move beyond summary, developing arguable claims supported by carefully chosen and integrated textual evidence. Annotation, discussion, and revision are central to the course, helping students become more discerning readers and more precise writers.

Students progress at a pace that fits their lives, while still receiving consistent instructor guidance and accountability.

Regular test-prep exercises support preparation for the English and writing portions of the SAT and ACT.  With AP English often on the horizon, this course provides a strong pre-AP foundation.

Why This Class?

A self-paced course at Blue Tent Online functions much like having a private English tutor:

  • ✍️ Individualized, instructor-written feedback on every writing assignment, big and small

  • 🧭 Flexible pacing without artificial deadlines—ideal for students balancing demanding schedules

  • 🤝 One-on-one assessment meetings every six weeks (or six topics) to review progress, set goals, and maintain momentum

  • 📚 The same academic standards and expectations as Honors English at Blue Tent

Students are never left guessing where they stand. Regular check-ins keep them accountable while preserving autonomy.
