Course Details

Our live, online AP Statistics course, which complies with the AP course audit and has been approved by the College Board, is for high school homeschoolers and  offered as a full-year class.  Students will explore major themes of statistics such as data collection, experimental design, probability, and testing statistical claims through inference procedures to prepare for the AP Exam. They will also work through teacher-recorded instructional lessons and practice problems aligned with the most updated (8th ed) AP Statistics Course and Exam Description provided by College Board. In the process, they will learn how to apply statistics to the everyday world around them.

This course can be taken live or in an asynchronous manner.  Students will register for one mode (live or async) and stay in that mode during the year.

  • Live Option:  Students meet live with their instructor and classmates for 75 minutes every other week and actively participate in classes, with cameras on. These live sessions provide a review of topics found in the weekly lessons, additional examples offered by the instructor for practice and small-group collaboration, and plenty of time to ask questions. Weekly due dates and detailed feedback on all assignments from the instructor will keep students on pace to be prepared for the AP Exam.

  • Asynchronous Option: Students in the asynchronous section do not attend a required weekly live meeting. Instead, they engage fully through the online classroom with instructor-led assignments, peer discussion forums, and written feedback. This section will be interactive, with regular student-to-student engagement and is well suited for students who need scheduling flexibility while still benefiting from a collaborative learning environment.

    • Async students will still receive the same AP Exam test prep provided in live classes through online forums and have a chance to discuss test-prep materials with other asynchronous classmates.

    • Please note: The asynchronous option is NOT a self-paced class.

  • The instructional content, assignments, and deadlines are the same for live and asynchronous (other than discussions).

Format

All classes include recorded teaching videos. The course includes periodic reviews where students and the instructor will collaborate to prepare students for the AP Exam.

  • In their online classroom, students might see some of the following:

    • Short instructional videos demonstrating the use of statistics in the real world

    • Supplemental lecture videos to help formalize ideas that are being discovered through the activities

    • Homework problems that build on concepts students learn in assigned activities

    • Activities covering specific learning topics that are both aligned with sections of the book, and designed to cover AP exam standards

    • Short checkpoint quizzes to test understanding of terms and concepts

    • Cumulative tests that are designed to mimic the AP exam to give students thorough practice with the AP framework.

  • Live Study Hall (Optional): The study hall can be utilized in two ways:

    • Drop in. Students can drop in to a Zoom study hall at any time for a quick question.

    • Homework time. They can log in to a Zoom study hall--with microphones muted and videos on or off--to work on their math homework and then unmute to get immediate help when questions arise.

  • Average weekly time estimate, including recorded instruction: 8-9 hours.

  • All Blue Tent live math classes are NCAA approved.

  • See our FAQs for:

    • age/grade guidelines, prerequisites, and class fit recommendations

    • a complete list of days, times, and breaks

    • a list of CA charter schools where this course is a-g approved

Foundational Elements

The course is organized around the following foundational concepts of statistics:

  • Variation and distribution – Students will use graphs and numerical calculations to describe variations and patterns seen among given data.

  • Patterns and uncertainty – Using probability and reasoning students will recognize patterns in data and project sample data to larger populations. Students will also describe errors found in experiments or surveys and tell how that affects conclusions.

  • Data-based predictions, decisions and conclusions – Students will use tools to make predictions and describe relationships among data.  These tools can include learning how to conduct a well-designed experiment, creating graphs of data and using statistical inference to draw conclusions.
