More about Dr. Sadie Burkhow

Originally from a small town (<600) hobby farm in Minnesota, Dr. Sadie Burkhow took many AP college courses in high school which helped her get her associate’s in arts (A.A.) degree from a community college in one year. From a suggestion of a chemistry instructor at the community college, she pursued a bachelor’s in science in Biochemistry in only 3 years. While earning her B.S. she craved to learn more chemistry and pursued graduate school at Iowa State University (ISU) for a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry, specializing on spectroscopy (think lasers and microscopes). During graduate studies she was a teaching assistant for general chemistry, analytical chemistry, and an instructor of record for a chemistry course for non-stem majors.

Sadie discovered her love of teaching at ISU and gained certifications in the ISU Preparing for Future Faculty Program as an associate, fellow, and scholar. She has developed several chemistry courses and is interested in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL) and implementing various pedagogical techniques for teaching chemistry. After graduate school, she decided to get experience in an industrial lab close to home at an ethanol plant. This provided real-world experiences in teaching to bring back to the classroom. Sadie currently is teaching chemistry and science education college courses as an adjunct faculty member at Riverland Community College in Minnesota (her alma mater!).

Sadie’s interests revolve mostly around homesteading while living in a small town. This includes a massive vegetable and flower garden. Preserving food with many different techniques including water-bath and pressure canning everything and anything, and dehydrating. And milling flour from wheat berries for baking, cooking, processing meat, smoking and grilling, making cheese and yogurt, and foraging locally. She also makes lotions, soaps, personal products, health related items for medicinal apothecary, and various food and beverage fermentations. While enjoying these homestead hobbies, she enjoys listening to music and horror and mythical fiction audiobooks.
